Two seasons following her historic triumph in Donizetti’s Three Queen trilogy, (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux), soprano Sondra Radvanovsky returns to the Metropolitan Opera to join the small community of history’s leading opera singers to headline the opening night of the Metropolitan Opera season. This in Norma, a role she debuted at the Met in 2013 and has sung around the world to solid acclaim. Radvanovsky is joined by Joyce DiDonato, another of the world’s leading bel-canto sopranos, creating some spectacular casting. DiDonato sang the title role of Maria Stuarda in the Met’s new production prior to Radvanovsky taking the role (ZEALnyc reviews here), and she returns this season as Cinderella in an anticipated Cendrillon (Massenet) following her breathtaking performance in the Met’s production of Rosinni’s La Cenerentola. Joseph Calleja joins for all performances. Marina Rebeka and Angela Meade share the role of Norma later in the run, and Jamie Barton (who joined Radvanovsky in Anna Bolena), takes the role of Adalgisa from DiDonato later in the run. Matthew Rose and Vazgen Gazaryan share the role of Oroveso while Carlo Rizzi and Joseph Colaneri share conducting duties. This is some very exciting casting in an anticipated new production by Sir David McVicar.
