An International Opera Festival in HD at Symphony Space

While many of the major opera houses are on hiatus until their fall seasons begin (at least here locally), there’s no reason you can’t still get your opera fix through some welcomed programming, an International Opera Festival of sorts, by the stalwart venue on the Upper West Side, Symphony Space. While it hosts many HD screenings throughout the year, including a series from London’s National Theatre, along with opera and ballet from a variety of producing organizations, they are hosting a special month-long opera series starting on July 19 and continuing through August 9; all screenings begin at 7:00pm.
So while your summer vacation plans may not include a trip to Europe, you can have the next best thing through having access to some very exciting operatic performances right here in your own backyard. The list of scheduled performances is below, so make your plans now.
Wednesday, July 19: Salzburg Festival’s Il trovatore
Since her sensational success in La traviata at the Salzburg Festival, the soprano Anna Netrebko, at the height of her popularity, returns regularly to the festival. This time, Netrebko shines as Leonora in Giuseppe Verdi’s tragic opera Il trovatore with Plácido Domingo as Count di Luna. On the rostrum leading the Vienna Philharmonic is none other than Daniele Gatti.
Wednesday, July 26: Bavarian State Opera’s La forza del destino
In Verdi’s La forza del destino, a stray bullet accidentally kills a young woman’s father, activating an unstoppable chain of fateful misunderstandings, merciless pursuits, and murderous revenge. This production by Bavarian State Opera, under the thoughtful and visionary direction of Martin Kušej and features today’s most exciting Verdi interpreters Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros in the leading roles.
Wednesday, August 2: La Scala’s I due Foscari
After his success in Simon Boccanegra at La Scala, Plácido Domingo returns with another major paternal role, with which he has already enjoyed great success in London. Joining Domingo onstage in this exciting La Scala production are Francesco Meli and the young soprano Anna Pirozzi, who came to international attention as a replacement in Nabucco conducted by Riccardo Muti in Salzburg.
Wednesday, August 9: Bavarian State Opera’s Un ballo in maschera
“A formidable vocal feast” (Bayerische Staatszeitung), this production of Verdi’s tale of illicit love, conspiracy, and betrayal unfolds in a surrealistic, shadowy setting created by director Johannes Erath. The legendary Zubin Mehta conducts the remarkable soprano Anja Harteros and tenor Piotr Beczała in this spectacular production.
