Do the Spirits Return: From Dark Ages to Sleight of Hand in Early 20th Century Stage Magic at the Morbid Anatomy Museum

Morbid Anatomy Museum

424A Third Avenue, Gowanus, Brooklyn, New York 11215

Hocus Pocus or are the spirits among us? This mesmerizing exhibition at the intriguingly-named Morbid Anatomy Museum in Gowanus, Brooklyn explores how early 20th century stage magicians capitalized on theater audiences’ seemingly endless appetite for spiritualism as entertainment. Focusing on the work of Howard Thurston, a contemporary of Harry Houdini and one of the most celebrated magicians of the early 20th century, the show includes nearly 150 never before exhibited posters, artworks, original stage props, photographs and artifacts from the collection of magician, historian and Brooklyn native, Rory Feldman. – Tim Wright
